Black & White

Believe it or not, but my initial plan for this portrait was to work in color, lol! 😉 But yes, I ended up working in black and white.

I had so much fun working in this free and loose way! So playful. This is mixed media, and it includes gesso, charcoal, and pastel. I worked in multiple translucent layers on top of each other.

The size of this portrait is smaller than I normally use: only 20 x 25 cm (approx. 7.5 x 9.5 inch). That was interesting, because usually I prefer to have lots of space to work on, so I can work with big and bold brush strokes and movements. But this time the smaller size didn’t limit me in feeling free in my movements, as you can see.

What a fun project, and I’m really happy with the spontaneity that this little portrait conveys.
