New Art Journal Portrait

I have been working on a new art journal portrait today.

I started off with gluing in some patterned paper. I don’t believe I have used any collage paper before in my portraits, so I was curious what it would do. Turned out that it didn’t do much, because I added so many layers on top of the paper that you can’t see the patterns anymore. But you can see the texture that the paper created, at places where it has created some folds in the paper. I like that effect, so I might use paper more often in my portraits – regardless whether you can see the patterns or not.

I then created the portrait alternating layers of acrylic paint and glaze with layers of soft pastel, pastel pencil and charcoal pencil.

Half way through the process I wasn’t sure where the portrait was going to, but I just kept on layering and now I really like it. I am very happy with the subtle colors, the linework and the texture created by the collage paper with soft pastel on top of it.

  1. Juna,

I adore this piece! I always use paper because I enjoy the process of putting it in my board. Most of the time you can see some of the paper but there are times when the paper does not show through. However as you shared the texture still shows and this is my favorite part!! I can’t wait to see your next piece!!
